Physical Education and
Movement

The body is as
much involved
with learning as
the head is.

Incorporating movement and physical education into daily lessons is part of Calgary Waldorf School's holistic approach to education. It helps students develop social awareness, strength, coordination, agility, and self-confidence.

Eurythmy

Eurythmy is a therapeutic art of movement that translates spoken word and music, and is an essential component to Waldorf education.

Through speech, music, and exercises the students learn how to move gracefully and harmoniously with others and become familiar with their spatial perception. Challenges with coordination and with dexterity can be improved. Some eurythmy exercises involve moving geometric forms, like figure-eights to music or poetry — geometry lessons can be integrated and experienced in a whole new way!

Movement Throughout the Grades

Movement in early childhood classes takes the shape of daily free play.

Students from Grade 1 - 9 have three movement/physical education classes per week. Movement is also used as a teaching tool in the curriculum with songs and actions, and rhythmically stamped and clapped times tables.

As children progress through the grades, cooperative games are played to develop their social skills. In Middle School, students are introduced to more traditional sports and athletics.
